What Is a CVT and What Do They Do?
A CVT, or Certified Veterinary Technician, is a licensed professional who plays a critical role in the care of your pet. CVTs are essentially the veterinary equivalent of a registered nurse in human medicine—they're highly trained, deeply knowledgeable, and absolutely essential to a smooth-running veterinary clinic.
Education & Certification
To become a CVT, an individual must:
-
Graduate from an accredited veterinary technology program (typically 2–4 years)
-
Pass the VTNE (Veterinary Technician National Exam)
-
Meet any state licensing requirements for certification
Once certified, they must maintain their license with continuing education to stay up to date on advances in animal health care.
