Why Does the Doctor Need to See My Pet for an Annual Exam?
We get this question a lot, and it’s a great one:
“Why does my pet need to see the doctor every year, especially if they seem healthy?”
The short answer? Because pets can’t tell us when something’s wrong—and even subtle changes can be signs of early illness. Annual exams give your veterinarian the chance to catch problems early, monitor changes over time, and ensure your pet stays healthy and happy for years to come.
🐾 What Happens During an Annual Exam?
An annual exam is a nose-to-tail evaluation where the doctor checks:
-
Weight, body condition, and muscle tone
-
Eyes, ears, and mouth (including dental health)
-
Heart and lung sounds
-
Skin and coat condition
-
Joint mobility and signs of pain
-
Abdomen for organ size or discomfort
-
Any lumps, bumps, or changes you may not have noticed
It’s also your chance to talk with the vet about:
-
Nutrition and weight management
-
Behavior concerns
-
Parasite prevention
-
Vaccine updates
-
Bloodwork or lab tests to screen for hidden issues
Why Every Year?
Pets age much faster than we do—about 5–7 “human” years for every calendar year, depending on their species and breed. A lot can change in that time. Annual exams allow your veterinarian to:
-
Detect illness early, before it becomes serious or costly
-
Track health trends over time with weight and lab work
-
Adjust care plans based on age, lifestyle, or new risks
-
Ensure vaccine schedules and parasite prevention stay current
For senior pets or those with chronic conditions, exams may be necessary every 6 months for closer monitoring.
“But My Pet Just Needs Vaccines…”
Even for vaccine-only visits, an exam is essential. Vaccines are medical treatments, and we must make sure your pet is healthy enough to receive them. Giving vaccines to a sick animal could cause harm or reduce their effectiveness.
By law and by best medical practice, a veterinarian must perform an exam to maintain a valid Veterinary-Client-Patient Relationship (VCPR)—which is required to prescribe medications or administer vaccines.
Your Pet Deserves a Health Advocate
Annual exams are about partnership. You know your pet best—but your veterinarian brings medical training, experience, and a fresh perspective. Together, we can catch problems early, answer your questions, and create a plan that fits your pet’s lifestyle and your goals.
Let’s keep your pet healthy, happy, and by your side for as long as possible. Annual exams are one of the easiest, most important ways to make that happen.
